3 Easy Steps For Decorating With Thrifted Home Decor:
1. Mix Old With New
2. Collect, Don’t Decorate
3. Personal Touches
The first step in decorating your home with decor from the thrift store is knowing what to look for. I have an entire post dedicated to this that you can find here – Best Home Decor Thrift Store Finds You Should Never Pass Up. The next step is mixing old decor with new decor. A home with character always has a well rounded balance of old and new. A mixture of new and old items fit well into any design style. When shopping, think old books paired with a newer vase with greenery. Or an antique painting paired new a new brass lamp.
The next step is looking for items to collect rather than items to decorate with. “Decorating” can become too trendy and and buying items from a single department store will force you to over spend and end up buying items you feel like you “need” rather than buying items that actually fit the space. With thrift store decorating, you tend to find the more unique decor items that accomplish a distinct collected home look that many thrifters have in their home. You can learn more about a collected home in this post.
The last step in decorating with thrift store decor is finding items that show your personality, tell your story, and add personal touches to your space. Personal touches make a room interesting while adding a cozy, welcoming aesthetic. These thrift store decorating ideas that add personal touches to the space will be different for everyone and every design. Look for items that are meaningful to you, showcase your personality, or remind you of a sweet memory.

Above is an example of mixing old with the new. My favorite thrift store decor item to style is old books. I look for distinct colors usually red, blue, or green, and try to stick with books that have a catchy or interesting title. Above, I paired the old thrifted books with a new vase with greenery and a decorative blue and gold oyster shell I bought on a beach vacation.
The next photos show an example of how I look for collectable items when thrift shopping. I collect pieces of classic blue and white china or any home decor with a similar pattern. The best part is they are so affordable and easy to find at thrift stores, antique malls, and Goodwills.
The last way I implemented these thrift store decorating tips is by shopping for thrifted home decor that is meaningful to me. Personally, I love decorating with choral, shells, or anything beach related. I love surrounding myself with memories and items I love. I am addicted to the hunt for these special thrift store home decor items!
Decorating from thrift stores has never been easier or more affordable with these 3 easy steps!
