This post is all about outdated home decor trends to avoid in 2024!
The Most Outdated Home Decor Trends Of 2024
1. Outdated Home Decor Trends: Open Floor Plans
The first interior design trend that is quickly on its way out is open floor plans. For years open floor plans have been all the rage in the design world but in 2024 we are kicking this trend to the curb… and I am here for it!
In 2024, you will be seeing many more closed floor plans. The focus is more on intimate seating arrangements and smaller spaces. You’ll be seeing a lot more rooms and walls in the new year.
Furniture designers have recently jumped on this design trend and opportunity to bring social gatherings and people back together through the selection of more intimate seating arrangements.
These designers are taking advantage of the closed floor plans. They are cashing in on opportunities for families and friends to spend more time together in social settings. Not only will you be seeing more closed floor plans but you’ll see a shift in furniture towards more curved sofas, accent chairs, and chairs + ottomans facing one another.
Alternatives:
Create a closed floor plan with smaller rooms. This creates a cozier environment and has a timeless interior style. Advantages of a closed floor plan include more opportunity to explore different design styles in each room.
Rather than having to stick to a single, certain look throughout the entirety of the house due to the open floor plan, you can experiment with a variety of different color palettes, styles, decor, and furniture in each individual room.

2. Home Decor Trends To Avoid In 2024: Crisp White And Gray Color Palettes
The next decor trend that you can kiss goodbye in 2024 is the crisp white and gray color palette that have been all the hype in recent years. However, according to the experts, this trend has fallen and COLOR is coming back strong in 2024!
If you’re a neutral lover, don’t fret! The neutrals will still be present in 2024 but on the warmer side. Neutrals like beige, cream, browns, and more earthy tones will be trending this year.
Alternatives:
As crisp white and muted grays are on their way out, expect to see the warmer, cozier neutrals everywhere! Incorporate these trendy colors in your wall paint, furniture, accessories, artwork, rugs, and more! Not only are warmer neutrals making headway, but so are more colorful rooms!
Expect to see the color of the year BLUE as well as shades of green and anything moody in 2024! For more information on the color of the year and other important home decor trends to look for this year, check out my post on THE TOP HOME DECOR TRENDS OF 2024!

3. Color Washing Is In And Different Colored Trim Is OUT
Gone are the days of different colored trim! You will not be seeing different color trim in 2024. Say farewell to bright color walls and white trim. This trend is now considered harsh and outdated.
Alternatives:
Rather than slapping some bright white paint on your trim, adapt to the “color washing” trend that is up and coming in 2024! According to the experts, color washing and painting rooms all out is an interior design trend on the rise.
We’re talking painting your walls, trim, ceiling, and doors all the same color. This creates an overall more cohesive and fresh look for your space!

4. Matching Furniture Sets Are GONE
Say so long to matching furniture sets from Ikea! Matching furniture like coffee tables, end tables, tv stands, couches, and recliners are gone in 2024. Even though matching furniture might be easy and convenient to buy and decorate with, it makes for a unwelcoming space.
Alternatives:
Instead of matching furniture, in 2024, the home decor trend that will be popular is mix and matching furniture, decor, and fabric patterns. Rather than your space looking like a department store showroom, decorate with a variety of different furniture styles and decor pieces.
A great way to do this is mixing old and new furniture and collecting these pieces over a period of time. In 2024 more “collected style” homes will be popular. Collected homes are carefully curated with a wide variety of design elements including textures, patterns, colors, and finishes.
In order to achieve this look, decorate with unique finds from antique stores, thrift stores, Goodwills, flea markets, etc. For more information on a collected home, check out my post here!

5. Home Decor Trends To Avoid In 2024: Word Signs
One of the biggest home decor trends in the last 50 years is FINALLY on its way out! Word signs will not be making an appearance in 2024. No more centering the decor or room around a “gather” sign in curvy font.
This trend has been extremely relevant in the farmhouse style but in 2024, it is time to ditch any sign you have and switch it out for more classy, sophisticated decor pieces.
Alternatives:
Time to swap your word signs for more on-trend, timeless pieces. Decorate with pieces like oil paintings, vintage pieces, antique finds, pottery, greenery, brass, or classic china.
Thrift shopping is the perfect way to find some of these unique pieces at an affordable price! Read my post on the best thrift store find to never pass up for more unique decor inspiration!
